BRENNAN FOR DEMS IN THE FIRST DISTRICT

Choosing the best candidate from the field of six Democrats running in the June 10 primary to win their party’s nomination to represent Maine’s 1st U.S. House District requires a process of elimination. Stephen Meister, a Winthrop physician and veteran of the first Gulf War, merits praise for his service to country and medicine, but he’s out of his league in this field.
Likewise, Adam Cote, an attorney from Portland, brings to the race the valuable perspective of firsthand military experience in Iraq. However, by advocating for further delays in withdrawing U.S. troops from the region in hopes of preventing a social meltdown there, Cote and Meister disregard the fact that turmoil and strife have long been the norm in Iraq and that the ongoing presence of U.S. forces there exacerbates the problem.
It’s altruistic but unrealistic to base our foreign policy on the notion that a responsible Iraqi government will miraculously emerge to guide a peaceful transition from U.S. occupation to autonomous democracy. That approach simply extends the sacrifice of U.S. lives and dollars trying to prevent a disaster that’s already happened.
