I am honored to announce my endorsement and enthusiastic support of Michael Brennan for Maine’s Representative to the Congress of the United States from the First Congressional District.I also bring greetings from my wife, Gretchen, perhaps the most intelligent and passionate person I have ever known, who also joins me in this announcement. She is attending a meeting in Brunswick and regrets she could not be here.

I first met Michael Brennan over three years ago on a cold, raw day in Monument Square at a Peace rally. Michael asked to speak to the gathered crowd that day. He talked about his deep concerns about the carnage in Iraq and the disconnect that infected so many of our politicians about the death and destruction in Iraq. He worried about how that disconnect would affect us all in the years ahead.

My instant reaction was: “This Michael Brennan guy is not afraid to tell the truth. Too bad his political career is over.” I couldn’t have been more wrong about his political career: it is flourishing. But I was right about the man

I have since attended many grass roots gatherings with Michael where he has continued to tell the truth with courage. We cannot be mired in an immoral occupation of Iraq pursuing a foreign policy of a “new cold war destabilization” to prop up the strategic economic advantages for the United States.

Gretchen and I believe that Michael Brennan has made the critical connection of the war on Iraq to the many unattended problems facing our nation today. Michael brings it all into focus as he reminds us that as long as we are militarily engaged in Iraq and obsessed with military intervention on a worldwide scale, we will all be held captive in terms of Energy and the Environment, Universal Single Payer Health Care, Education, Fair Taxation, and Reinvesting in the United States.

Gretchen and I are convinced that he is committed to ending the war on Iraq and bringing our troops home immediately and taking care of them, and then he will focus on the needs of Maine and the nation. We believe that Michael Brennan has shown that he is a leader with courage and integrity. We believe that Michael will provide that leadership to help Mainers and the nation by facing up to problems and by offering concrete solutions. We believe that Michael Brennan will be one of the finest leaders ever produced by the State of Maine.

I personally urge all who supported me for Congress in 2006, to examine what Michael Brennan believes in and to support him in the upcoming primary election.

If you believe in Michael Brennan, as we do, you know we have a job to do. Over the weeks ahead through Election Day, tell as many people as you can, person-to-person, why you believe in Michael Brennan.

I am in the process of re-registering as a Democrat because of Michael Brennan, and I will vote for him as Gretchen has already done.

I ask you to consider voting for Michael Brennan in the Democratic primary.
